Limestone FCU Wraps Up LSSU Kids Camp with Pop-up Shop Event

The Hub @ LSSU, driven by Limestone Financial Credit Union (LFCU) recently hosted an entrepreneurial program as part of Lake Superior State University’s (LSSU) Kids Camp. The initiative aimed to teach children the fundamentals of owning and operating their own business while incorporating basic concepts of financial literacy.

As part of the camp, LFCU organized a Kids Camp Pop-up Shop, where the children had the opportunity to set up and run their own shops. The program provided valuable lessons in teamwork, money management, customer service, and creativity—all in a safe and supportive environment.

With plenty of teamwork, a burst of creativity, and just a touch of chaos, the young entrepreneurs set up tables to sell their handcrafted products to the community. The event was held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, outside The Hub @ LSSU in the Walker Cisler Student & Conference Center.

Thanks to the support of parents, community members, LSSU students, faculty, and staff, the kids raised an impressive $1,137.83. Adding a philanthropic element, students were invited to nominate a local charity or nonprofit to receive the proceeds. Following a vote, the group selected the local Animal Shelter as the recipient. We arranged for the Animal Shelter to come and accept their donation, and they brought puppies for the children to enjoy.

“I truly enjoyed teaching the kids financial literacy. It was exciting to watch them grow and understand the difference between needs and wants, while learning how to save. One of the most rewarding parts was seeing their creativity shine while working on their business plans, and then watching everything come to life at the pop-up shop.”

-Sophie Shepard, Branch Manager and Loan Officer, at The Hub @ LSSU.

“We truly enjoyed hosting financial literacy sessions during the LSSU Kids Camp. This year, our focus was on entrepreneurship, and wow, did the children amaze us with their creativity, enthusiasm, and excitement! It was inspiring to watch them bring their ideas to life and run their very own shops. We’re also so thankful to the customers who came out to support these young entrepreneurs and their hard work.”

-Sabrina Oshelski, Business Development Officer, at Limestone FCU.
